PRESERVED FOODS
All entries are due to the Pavilion Annex on Sunday, before the Fair, from 10 am to 7 pm.
All entries and awards will be released on Sunday, closing day of the Fair, between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
1. All entries must be prepared using WSU and USDA recommendations. We will
also accept the recommendations as state in the current Ball Blue Book Guide
to Home Canning, Freezing, and Dehydration. Entries are not opened for judging.
2. All canning must be in sealed, STANDARD, clean jars. NO MAYONNAISE TYPE
JARS will be accepted. Wax seals are not permissible. Rings must be removed
for exhibit.
3. All entries must be canned using the same brand of jar and lid: Ball Home
Canning Jars sealed with Ball Two-Piece Vacuum Caps or Kerr Home Canning Jars
sealed with Kerr Two-Piece Vaccum Caps. The only exception is Ball Collection
Elite lids may be used on either Ball or Kerr brand jars.
4. When a jar is sealed with a Ball Two-Piece Vacuum Cap, the manufacturing
date on the lid should not be used to determine the age of the product. Ball
brand lids may be used after the year of production. Lids of current year
production may not be available in all stores, making it necessary for participants
to use lids prior to the current year.
5. ALL ENTRIES (INCLUDING DRIED) MUST BE LABELED WITH PRODUCT NAME, DATE OF
PREPARATION, TYPE OF PACK, PROCESSING METHODS, AND PROCESSING TIME.
6. Dried foods are to be exhibited in either small, clear canning jars or
in small zip-loc plastic bags.
7. The Department Superintendent reserves the right to disqualify any entry
not meeting these standards.
8. Exhibitors may enter any number of items per class, however, each item
must be different.
9. 4-H members may only enter items that cannot be entered in 4-H classes.
2003 Best of Category: Soft Spread Award

To promote the art of preparing soft spreads and safe home canning, Alltrista Consumer Products Company is offering this special adult award category. Any entry meeting the following guidelines is eligible:
The best soft spread prepared using Ball® Fruit Jell® Pectin, submitted by an adult, canned in Ball® Home Canning Jar and sealed with Ball Two-Piece Vacuum Cap or Collection Elite™ Cap or Freedom Garden™ Cap or canned in a Kerr® Home Canning Jar sealed with Kerr® Two-Piece Vacuum Cap, Collection Elite™ Cap or Freedom Garden™, shall be designated Best of Category: Soft Spreads.
The entry designated the Best of Category: Soft Spreads, receives the following:
New Ball Blue Book of Preserving, one (1) Jelly Strainer, one (1) Replacement Bag, and three (3) coupons for any variety Ball® Fruit Jell® Pectin
All winners submitted for award distribution agree to allow Alltrista Consumer Products to post their achievement to Alltrista’s website, www.homecanning.com.
2003 Adult Premium Food Preservation Awards

To promote the art of home canning, and to honor adults who excel at the art of home canning, Alltrista Consumer Products Company is offering first and second place adult award categories.
Judges will select the two best entries submitted by an adult in Fruit, Vegetable, Pickle and Soft Spread categories canned in Ball® Jars and sealed with Ball® Two-Piece Vacuum Caps, Collection Elite™ Caps or Freedon Garden™ Caps. Or, canned in Kerr® Jars and sealed with Kerr® Two- Piece Vacuum Caps, Collection Elite™ Caps or Freedom Garden™ Caps. In Addition, selections of the two best entries submitted by adults in the soft spread category will be limited to entries prepared using one of the Ball® Fruit Jell® Pectins: powder, no sugar needed or liquid.
The entries designated first place from each category will receive the following:
•New Ball Blue Book of Preserving, one (1) five dollar product coupon (Ball or Kerr) and 1 (one) four piece Harvest Label Set..
The entries designated second place from each category will receive the following:
New Ball Blue Book of Preserving, and one (1) five dollar coupon for Ball® or Kerr® Home Canning Products .

To promote the art of pickling foods and safe home canning, Alltrista Consumer Products Company is offering this special adult award category. Any entry meeting the following guidelines is eligible.
The best pickled fruit or pickled vegetable prepared using 5% acidity vinegar, submitted by an adult and canned in a Ball® Home Canning Jar and sealed with a Ball® Two-Piece Vacuum Cap, Collection Elite™ Cap or Freedom Garden™ Cap or canned in a Kerr® Home Canning Jar and sealed with a Kerr® Two-Piece Vacuum Cap, Collection Elite™ Cap or Freedom Garden ™ Cap shall be designated Best of Category: Pickled Foods.
The entry designated the Best of Category: Pickled Foods, receives the following:
New Ball Blue Book of Preserving, 1 (one) jar lifter, 1 (one) Bubble Freer, 1 (one) Lid Wand, 1 (one) four piece Harvest Label Set and 1(one) $5 product coupon (Ball or Kerr).
